The Even Feed Foot, sometimes called a “Walking” Foot, is helpful when sewing several layers of fabric together. Most often used when quilting, the Even Feed Foot easily “walks” over the fabric layers. This is because the foot has its own set of feed dogs that work in conjunction with the machine’s feeding system. The upper feeding mechanism “pulls” the top fabric at the same rate at the machine’s feed dogs are pulling the bottom fabric. This helps to keep the layers together, prevents shifting and bunching of the top layer. The Even Feed Foot is also great for matching plaids or stripes and sewing fabrics with nap or pile.
The existing presser foot shank need to be removed from the machine before attaching the Even Feed Foot. This attachment has an arm that sits above the needle clamp. Position the even feed foot onto the Texture Fabric – Create texture in fabrics by stitching parallel rows across the fabric. Then for added interest, create more parallel rows that run down or diagonally, crossing over the other rows. Use a straight stitch or decorative stitch for even more appeal. The textured fabric can be used in tote bags, hand bags or even pockets and collars. To speed up the process, use the edge of the even feed foot as a guide to stitch rows that are close together. This saves time, eliminating the need to mark the rows beforehand.
