The Free Motion Sewing Feet allow you to sew in any direction e.g., forward, backward, and sideways. Free Motion means you must move the fabric because the feed teeth are down. Free Motion Quilting and Free Motion Embroidery are made possible with this foot. You should hoop your fabric with stabilizer for Free Motion Embroidery. A hoop or stabilizer is not required for Free Motion Quilting.
