Star Shadows



Create the illusion of stars floating over the surface of a quilt and casting shadows below. This quilt with various star sizes creates a unique design that makes a spectacular wallhanging. The Fast Flying Geese Technique and Wing Clipper Tool make quick work of this project.  Project size: 38” x 40”

Skill Level: Confident Beginner

The Wing Clipper 1 and Quilter’s Magic Wand are required for this pattern. These tools are available from the instructor during class, or are available at Nashua Sew and Vac.

PRE-CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS

Pattern: The Star Shadows pattern is INCLUDED in the price of the workshop.

The Wing Clipper Tool is required for this pattern. The Quilter’s Magic Wand is highly recommended. The tools are available at Nashua Sew and Vac.

          Light Value/Background Fabric                  1 ¼ yards

          Dark Value/Star Point Fabric(s)                 3/8 yard total

          Medium Value/Shadow Fabric                   ½ yard

          (I would suggest a tone-on-tone or solid fabric)

          Medium or Dark/Star Center Fabrics         ¼ yard

          Inner Border                                               ¼ yard (not a fat quarter)

          Outer Border and Binding                1 ¼ yards

          Backing                                             2 2/3 yards

You will need to pre-cut:

          - From the Light Value/Background Fabric, cut:

                   - 10 squares          5 ½” x 5 ½”

                   - 4 rectangles        5 ½” x 3”

                   - 4 rectangles        2 ½” x 4 ½”

                   - 8 rectangles        2” x 3 ½”

                   - 24 rectangles      1 ½” x 2 ½”

                   - 4 squares           4 ½” x 4 ½”

                   - 12 squares          3 ½” x 3 ½”

                   - 8 squares            2 ½” x 2 ½”

                   - 16 squares          2” x 2”

                   - 48 squares          1 ½” x 1 ½”

                  

- From the Dark Value/Star Point Fabric(s), cut:

                  - 4 rectangles        1 ½” x 4 ½”

                  - 2 rectangles        4 ½” x 17”

                  - 2 rectangles        4 ½” x 19 ½”

                  - 28 squares          3” x 3”

                  - 16 squares          2 ½” x 2 ½”

                  - 48 squares          2” x 2”

-        From the Medium Value/Shadow Fabric, cut:

                  - 3 strips               1 ½” x WOF

                  - 4 squares           5 ½” x 5 ½”

                  - 2 squares            4 ½” x 4 ½”

                  - 6 squares            3 ½” x 3 ½”

                  - 4 squares            3” x 3”

                  - 10 squares           2 ½” x 2 ½”

                  - 28 squares           2” x 2”

                  - 12 squares           1 ½” x 1 ½”

                  

- From the Medium or Dark/Star Center Fabrics, cut:

                  - 2 squares            4 ½” x 4 ½”

                  - 4 squares            3 ½” x 3 ½”

                  - 12 squares          2 ½” x 2 ½”

 

  • Coordinating or neutral piecing thread
  • Rotary cutter with fresh blade
  • Cutting mat
  • 6 ½” x 12 ½” ruler
  • Marking pencil or Pigma Pen that draws a fine line
  • Sewing machine, clean and oiled, with new needle, ¼” foot   
  • Basic sewing supplies: fabric scissors, pins, seam ripper, etc.
  • Pencil and pad for notes
  • Optional: Small iron and pressing surface
