Free-Motion Mastery in a Month

Free-Motion Mastery in a Month: The Simple, Step-by-Step Learning System for Machine Quilting Success! (One-day or Multi-day Workshop)

Want to learn to do free-motion quilting but don’t know where to start? Can you do a few simple patterns but you want to expand your creativity? Have you taken other classes and failed? Are you afraid you’ll ruin that beautiful top you spent weeks piecing? This is the class for you!

RaNae's unique teaching system and specialized tools guide you step-by-step through simple exercises that will get you moving comfortable at the sewing machine and build your quilting skills as you quilt one block at a time. You'll go home with a practice plan to continue building your skills and finish quilting your first free-motion quilt, or finish your blocks into the project shown above. Best of all, you'll leave class saying "I can DO this!"

In this class you will learn how to:
- Pre-train your hands anytime, anywhere, before you sit down at the sewing machine.
- Set up your machine for free-motion quilting
- Move your hands, your body and the quilt for relaxed, efficient quilting
- Quilt the fundamental shapes that are the basis for all quilting patterns
- Join pre-quilted blocks to make a quilt of any size

The class is taught on domestic sewing machines, but the principles and exercises work equally well on a sit down or frame-mounted long-arm. The book includes instructions for domestic machines, as well as both sit-down and frame-mounted long-arm machines.

Required materials for class:

If you do not already have the following items, you will need to purchase them in or before class. -- A copy of the Free-Motion Mastery in a Month book (It's a good idea to purchase at least the book before class, so you have an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the material).

Fabric Kits
Nashua Sew and Vac will provide kits for this class for your convenience

Sewing machine in good working order set up -
____ Make sure your machine is cleaned, lubricated and working properly. Sew on it before you come to class to test it! DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP -- IT IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL
____ Make sure you have a free-motion quilting foot and know how to attach it.
____ Know how to drop the feed dogs
If your machine does not allow the feed dogs to be dropped, know how to set the stitch length to 0. There are plates available to cover the feed dogs, but I find that most of these are too high for free-motion quilting -- they end up pressing against the free-motion foot and don’t allow the fabric to move around. I prefer not to use a plate, and instead simply set the stitch length to 0 so the feed dogs do not advance the fabric.
____ Know how to adjust the tension. If you have a computerized machine, know where to find the tension adjustment control before you come to class.
____ Bring the instruction manual (you can probably find it online if you can’t find it at home).
You will need these accessories
____ Free-motion quilting foot or darning foot ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL

Instructor Bio: RaNae Merrill is an award-winning quilter, author and teacher. Her training as a concert pianist led to Free-Motion Mastery in a Month, the unique approach to teaching free-motion machine quilting in her latest book. She debuted on the quilting scene with her "spiral" quilts which have appeared in national shows and magazines, and her previous three books, Simply Amazing Spiral Quilts, Magnificent Spiral Mandala Quilts and Sideways Spiral Quilts have already become quilting classics. She is a popular instructor at guilds, and frequently teaches at major quilt shows around the world. RaNae found her calling as a professional quilter after previous careers as a pianist, a photographer and a travel writer. (She holds both Bachelor and Master degrees in Piano Performance from University of Southern California and UCLA respectively.) She began quilting in 1989, beginning with a half-finished, king-sized quilt her grandmother had been making for her when she died in 1976. When she found a batch of nine-patch squares in a trunk that had belonged to that grandmother, she started making baby quilts for her nieces and nephews, incorporating Grandma?s blocks into each one. When people began praising her designs and suggesting that she quilt professionally, she brushed off the idea as impractical. Several years later, she began to experiment with making some of her travel photographs into fabric designs. When she went to ask advice, the head designer at Blank Quilting bought one of the lines, and suggested that she attend Quilt Market, where she was astonished to discover that being a professional quilter could, indeed, be a rewarding career! Today RaNae designs quilts and patterns, writes quilting books and teaches workshops in the USA and abroad -- in both English and Spanish. She still loves to travel! "One of my students wrote to me at the end of a project and said 'I never thought I could do anything like this. You've changed my life.' Moments like that are when I get the greatest joy from quilting."
