Fast and Fun Rag Quilt Class - Classroom

Rag quilts are quilts that have exposed seams that fray when washed. It makes a very comfy quilt that's easy to make but impressive to look at. . This rag quilt sews up to be 50" x 60". You can change the number and size of squares in the quilt to make it larger or smaller.

A rag quilt differs in construction from a traditional quilt.  Each square has a front and a back, and may include another flannel layer in the middle, or thin batting in the middle.  The squares are joined together in rows and columns with a 1/2" seam allowance.  The seam allowances are then snipped at 3/8 to 1/2" intervals to create a fringe.  Instructions will be provided for each attendee.

Places for 4 Sewing machines in the classroom for 4 students.  Please bring your own sewing machine (in good working order), fabric, scissors, thread, and any other notions you prefer. You may also bring a rotary cutter and small cutting mat.

Flannel Fabrics are usually used for the rag quilt.  Use the information below to determine how large you want your quilt and how much fabric to bring.  (We have some Flannel Fat Quarter Packs available). Yardage is based on 40-44" wide fabric (selvage to selvage).  Place two layers of flannel with wrong sides together to cut squares.  Fabric will be cut into 6" x Width of Fabric (WOF).  Bring 4 coordinating flannel fabrics, or go for an equivalent scrappy effect.

(Make sure the fabric is cut squarely at the store, buy additional to straighten grain if needed)
