NS&V does it again! I was having a problem with a shirt I was trying to embroider. I called NS&V, spoke to Debbie -- she gave me some excellent advice and all turned out well!
Thanks for saving my project!

I had an interesting experience the other day. I was at Jo-Ann Fabrics getting some fabric for a project. There was another man in the store near the fabric cutting area wo was trying to buy a sewing machine for his girlfriend. The store employee who was "helping" him really didn't know anything about sewing machines, nor did anyone else in the store. Jo-Ann mostly sells Singer machines which appear to be low-end.
I felt like pulling him aside and telling him to forget about a machine from Jo-Ann. I wanted to tell him to go to a store like Nashua Sew and Vac, where there are people who know sewing, sewing machines, and how to use them. There he could find the right machine for his girlfriend, get some lessons to get her up and running, and take more classes if she wants to get into more complicated projects. There would also be experienced technicians to fix the machine if it got broken or needed maintenance. Also, the shop offers a relaxed environment where it is fun to be around people who love what they do.
The point is is that sewing is not easy at first. It takes a while to get going with it. The learning curve can be steep at first. You can't just buy a machine and some thread and sit down and sew a project. Buying a cheap machine from a discounter is in most cases a bad mistake. This guy's girl friend will have to learn the machine on her own. If she gets frustrated or can't get the hang of it then most likely it will turn into a $399.99 door stop.
In the end I did not say anything because it would not have been appropriate (and I might have gotten kicked out of the store!) But if anyone asks me about sewing I would not hesitate to tell them to go to Nashua. You may spend a bit more for a machine but you will get what you pay for and most of all, you will be off to good start with lots of support.
I have to admit that I was surprised when I bought my machine at how relatively expensive they are. It is a great temptation to try to save some money and go with something cheaper. However, I am glad I got what I did buy and I have to say that it is worth every penny I paid. I am also glad I bought my machine at a place where the staff really knows the machines. This has made a huge difference in my ability to use the machine, make things I am proud of, and above all, have some fun doing what I do!

Hello Ruth

Congratulations on your new blog. I don't know that much about blogs but I am hoping that this can turn into a forum where your customers can exchange tips about their experiences.

I have a Pfaff Creative 4.0 that I bought at your shop last January. I am having a lot of fun learning how to sew and embroider with this machine.

2 tips I will share with you right off the bat:

1. If you are going to do digitizing, spend the extra money and get 4D Suite. The modules it comes with will make a HUGE difference in your projects. Longer learning curve but for serious digitizers it is well worth it!

2. For embroidery I have found nothing works better than Robison-Anton threads. I bought some embroidery thread at Jo-Ann Fabrics once and it was a nightmare. The best thread I have used, even for complex embroideries, is Robison-Anton.

That's it for now!

Wow, NSV has been really exciting lately! The CV update party was a blessing. (I really try to avoid doing updates myself and this was so very much appreciated.) The thread jumper fix-it was a real surprise. It shows your continuing concern to support our needs, and the refreshments while we learned the new features just added to our machines, were wonderful. (That cake was really yummy!) What a super day! Yesterday at T-n-T we also learned lots of new things, were treated to a first-class luncheon (ohmigosh, even orchids on our meals!), and we laughed from the moment we arrived 'til the moment we left. Prizes here and there, and could we have asked for more? Absolutely not! Wonderful day again. Thank you Ruthie, Eddie, SNV teachers and crew. You've been outdoing yourselves lately and it really shows.

Hello there,
I just found this while looking up Viking Club - I missed it a week ago, Darn.
What a great addition to focus on garment sewing for a while. I am anxious to stop in and see the stuff you have - don't know how much I can add to my "plate and list" of sewing projects, but you never know!

My next trip to Nashua, will add a stop at the store.
